School-Wide Expectations

As we strive to cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment at PBE, I wanted to take a moment to remind you of our school-wide expectations, which are:

Be Safe

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

Be Kind

These expectations are not only integral to creating a conducive atmosphere for learning within the school premises but are also fundamental principles that contribute to the overall well-being and development of our students.

In line with our commitment to fostering these values, I encourage you to reinforce these expectations at home as well. By practicing safety, respect, and responsibility in your daily interactions and activities with your child, you not only support their growth and character development but also reinforce the importance of these principles beyond the classroom.

Safety

Please supervise your children if you are hanging out in the front of the school after dismissal. Children are not permitted to climb the trees on school property. If/when they fall, we are liable. I LOVED climbing tress as a child, so please take them to a park off campus so they can explore the tree-climbing fun. We just cannot allow it to happen on school property. Please also be mindful with all the interactions that you engage in while on or near our elementary-school campus. Please refrain from videotaping other peoples’ children unless you have been given permission from the parent. As we teach our students to be respectful to each other we want to practice demonstrating respect in all our interactions with one another as well. Our children are always watching.

This year, we are excited to introduce several new initiatives aimed at enhancing student learning and well-being. Our school is embracing Multi-tiered Systems and Supports (MTSS) with a focus on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS.) We believe that strong communication between home and school is vital for student success. We will continue to use our school website, school Messenger, weekly emails of our Penguin Press, and our mobile app, Konstella, to keep you informed about important events, updates, and classroom activities. Konstella: https://www.konstella.com/cd/FYA4UQ).Please ensure that your contact information is up to date in our system so that you receive all communications in a timely manner. Accessing our School During Construction

If you have driven by our school, you know that our site is still under construction. All our classrooms are fully functional and our brand new UTK and kindergarten classrooms are open for the first time to our incoming students. There will be four Ingress and Egress gates (entrances and dismissal) to our campus:

Starting on Fanuel, we will have the new UTK/Kinder entrance. All UTK and kindergarten students may enter through this gate. UTK will be dismissed from this gate:

Fanuel Gate will be open for all students to enter, and kindergarten will be dismissed from this gate:

Around the corner, on Tourmaline, will be the next gate that we have historically named “Fig Tree” gate. All students may enter from here as well:

Finally, we have the front office gate which is on Tourmaline:

New Initiatives for 2024-2025

This year, we are excited to introduce several new initiatives aimed at enhancing student learning and well-being. Our school is embracing Multi-tiered Systems and Supports (MTSS) with a focus on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS.) We believe that by setting clear expectations from the start, all students will enjoy a learning environment that is safe, positive, and nurturing. Our staff will also be focusing on being culturally responsive practitioners who use a neuroscientific lens to recognize, celebrate, and cultivate every child’s potential in an inclusive learning environment.

Safety

Absolutely, ensuring the safety of all students, including the safety patrol, during morning drop-offs is paramount. Adhering to designated crosswalks helps maintain a safe environment for everyone. Please do not make U-turns in front of the school on Tourmaline or on Fanuel (especially during drop off and pick up). Also, please note that Fig Tree will be closed promptly at 7:50 allowing the supervising teacher to attend to his/her class.

Please supervise your children if you are hanging out in the front of the school after dismissal.

Week 23 Q4 3, 2024

I cannot believe that this school year is ending this week. Last week our Safety Patrol was officially discharged by our fabulous SDUSD Police Department and Mr. Sandler received a special recognition for his incredible years of service with PBE and the Safety Patrol. We will be looking for parent volunteers for next school year, so please keep a lookout for that communication in August.

It was wonderful to see so many families attend the end-of-the-year FOPBE celebration on Thursday. I look forward to many more FOPBE events next year. Though I have only been here for part of the year, it truly has been a pleasure to serve you and your children, and I look forward to seeing everyone again next year. We wish you a memorable final week of the 23-24 school year and a safe and relaxing summer. See you in August!

It’s great to be a Penguin!

With penguin pride,

Dr. Karon Schnitzer

Week 22 Q4 May 28, 2024

We hope you had a wonderful 3-day weekend. The end of the school year is approaching rapidly and there is so much to still look forward. Last week was “Mental Health Matters” Spirit Week and our wellness ambassadors shared many great tips throughout the week. Mr. Sandler had students win the California-San Diego Region Stock Market Game which provides our future financial leaders education on investment strategy in this prestigious competition. Congratulations to Davin, Gordon, and Jericho! Open House was a great success. Our students and teachers have been working so hard. It was great to partner with PB Town Council too and see so many families enjoying visiting classrooms, exploring the fire truck, various booths and having time to build community.

This week’s Caught Being a Leader winners are:

  • Lilli and Brennan from Ms. Alba’s class;
  • Summer and Lincoln from Ms. Reynolds’ class;
  • Charlie from Ms. Luce’s class;
  • Brady from Ms. Denenburg’s class;
  • Kobe from Ms. Cromar’s class;
  • Frances from Mrs. Hernandez’ class;
  • Hunter and Rhythm from Mr. Sandler’s class

Why do we wear poppies on Memorial Day?

The Memorial Day poppy is worn to remember soldiers who have given their lives for their country and honors their dedication and sacrifice. Many Americans will pin a bright-red poppy to their shirts as a sign of respect. A gracious donor donated poppies for each of our students at PBE.

Week 20 Q4 May 13, 2024

It was another great week at PBE. HUGE thank you to FOPBE for making our PBE staff feel so appreciated. We kicked things off this week with a safety training for our staff with Officer Sawada. Ned came to PBE to talk all about growing our brains and the power of yet. He did lots of fun tricks with yo-yos and reminded us to persevere when things become difficult. We concluded the week with our fabulous Penguin Dash. What a fun event! Thank you so much to FOPBE and all of our amazing volunteers that made this event so special for our penguins.

Please note that our end-of-the-year state testing continues this week for grades 3 though 5. It is important that students arrive on time to school each day. Please make sure that your child eats a healthy breakfast and gets plenty of rest. They also need to bring with them a growth mindset knowing that all they have to do is try their very best. State Testing for CAASPP begins on Wednesday, May 8th-9th for English Language Arts. They will test for mathematics on May 14th-15th with make-up testing days on the 16th. Fifth grade students will conclude testing with a Science test on May 21st. Your teacher can share how to access practice tests if you would like to review the tests with your child.

Attendance Matters

Students are expected to attend school for the entire school day. Regular attendance assures that your child will not miss valuable instructional time. The hands-on experiences, teacher-directed lessons, and small group work that are missed cannot be made up. This dynamic learning makes consistent, regular attendance imperative to your child’s academic growth.

Please schedule non-emergency appointments outside of regular school hours and plan vacations during school holiday and vacation times.

To report an absence:
California law requires us to document the reason for every student’s absence. If your child must be absent due to illness, or emergency:
Text (858) 900-3460
Call the office, (619) 605-4200 to leave a voicemail or speak with our School Assistant, Jennifer Toledo, before 10 a.m.

Absences and Tardies:
A student will be considered tardy if they arrive after all check-in is complete and the gates have been closed. If you arrive after this time, please check in at the office.
Tardies:
Our school day begins promptly at 7:50 a.m. Being tardy is very disruptive to your child’s school day as well as the school day of his/her classmates. He/she misses the morning routine and important information that teachers review at the start of the day. Please assist us in meeting your child’s educational needs by making sure your child is at school before 7:50 a.m.
If arriving later than 7:50 a.m. students must come to the office to check in and receive a tardy pass.
If tardiness becomes habitual, the principal or school counselor will meet with your student/family to brainstorm and find solutions.

Truancy:
In accordance with the Education Code (48200, 48260 (a), 48260.5), a series of official district truancy letters are mailed to parents and reported to the state in cases of excessive unexcused absences and/or arriving late or being taken out of school early.
Please note that truancy letters are sent home for a combination of unexcused absences, late arrivals, and/or leaving school early.

Independent Study Contracts:
Independent study contracts (ISC) must be approved by the principal in advance, at least 5 days of the scheduled absence. The principal may meet with parents to review the circumstances of the contract and the child’s attendance record and achievement.
If approved, independent study contracts also require that the assigned work is completed and sent in with the child upon his/her return to school
Generally ISC must be for a duration of a minimum of 3 school days to a maximum of 14 days per school year.
Independent Study Contracts are important to school funding.
Contact Penny Lobato, plobato@sandi.net, to set up an independent study contract.

As we teach our students to be respectful to each other we want to practice demonstrating respect in all our interactions with one another as well. Our children are always watching.

The Penguin Press

Week 19 Q4 May 6, 2024

It was another great week at PBE. We kicked things off with Principal Overholt who did an amazing job as principal for the day. Later that week, we had principal appreciation day, and I was overwhelmed by your warm well wishes and acts of kindness. PBE truly is the best place to be, and I am blessed to serve you and your precious children.

Please note that our end-of-the-year state testing begins for grades 3 though 5 this week.

The leaders we celebrated this week are:

  • Laila and Liliana from Ms. Reynolds’ class;
  • Julian and Stephen from Ms. Arthur’s class;
  • Lena from Mrs. Luce’s class;
  • Max from Mrs. Denenberg’s class;
  • Piper and Luci from Mrs. Hernandez’ class;
  • Allison from Mrs. Warner’s class;
  • Frankie from Ms. Raugewitz’ class

It’s great to be a Penguin!

Is the Penguin Principal Coming to Your Child’s Class?

Our positive incentive attendance plan is underway. Each class gets a letter when they have perfect attendance; they get a letter to spell the word ATTENDANCE. Since the word attendance has 10 letters, they would need 10 perfect days to earn a party.

Leader in Me

We would LOVE for you to volunteer!

Do you have any spare time? We could use your help volunteering in classrooms or even just making copies to help teachers. Parents volunteering in elementary school plays a crucial role in fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment. Your involvement goes beyond assisting with tasks; it creates a sense of community and strengthens the bond between parents, teachers, and students. By dedicating your time in the classroom, you contribute to the overall well-being of the school community. Volunteering also allows you to actively engage in your child’s education, gaining insight into the curriculum, and providing valuable support for teachers. Furthermore, it instills a sense of responsibility and civic duty in children, showcasing the importance of active participation in community endeavors. Get involved today!
