Attendance Matters

Students are expected to attend school for the entire school day. Regular attendance assures that your child will not miss valuable instructional time. The hands-on experiences, teacher-directed lessons, and small group work that are missed cannot be made up. This dynamic learning makes consistent, regular attendance imperative to your child’s academic growth.

Please schedule non-emergency appointments outside of regular school hours and plan vacations during school holiday and vacation times.

To report an absence:
California law requires us to document the reason for every student’s absence. If your child must be absent due to illness, or emergency:
Text (858) 900-3460
Call the office, (619) 605-4200 to leave a voicemail or speak with our School Assistant, Jennifer Toledo, before 10 a.m.

Absences and Tardies:
A student will be considered tardy if they arrive after all check-in is complete and the gates have been closed. If you arrive after this time, please check in at the office.
Tardies:
Our school day begins promptly at 7:50 a.m. Being tardy is very disruptive to your child’s school day as well as the school day of his/her classmates. He/she misses the morning routine and important information that teachers review at the start of the day. Please assist us in meeting your child’s educational needs by making sure your child is at school before 7:50 a.m.
If arriving later than 7:50 a.m. students must come to the office to check in and receive a tardy pass.
If tardiness becomes habitual, the principal or school counselor will meet with your student/family to brainstorm and find solutions.

Truancy:
In accordance with the Education Code (48200, 48260 (a), 48260.5), a series of official district truancy letters are mailed to parents and reported to the state in cases of excessive unexcused absences and/or arriving late or being taken out of school early.
Please note that truancy letters are sent home for a combination of unexcused absences, late arrivals, and/or leaving school early.

Independent Study Contracts:
Independent study contracts (ISC) must be approved by the principal in advance, at least 5 days of the scheduled absence. The principal may meet with parents to review the circumstances of the contract and the child’s attendance record and achievement.
If approved, independent study contracts also require that the assigned work is completed and sent in with the child upon his/her return to school
Generally ISC must be for a duration of a minimum of 3 school days to a maximum of 14 days per school year.
Independent Study Contracts are important to school funding.
Contact Penny Lobato, plobato@sandi.net, to set up an independent study contract.

Is the Penguin Principal Coming to Your Child’s Class?

Our positive incentive attendance plan is underway. Each class gets a letter when they have perfect attendance; they get a letter to spell the word ATTENDANCE. Since the word attendance has 10 letters, they would need 10 perfect days to earn a party.

School-Wide Expectations

As we strive to cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment at PBE, I wanted to take a moment to remind you of our school-wide expectations, which are:

Be Safe

Be Respectful

Be Responsible.

These expectations are not only integral to creating a conducive atmosphere for learning within the school premises but are also fundamental principles that contribute to the overall well-being and development of our students.

In line with our commitment to fostering these values, I encourage you to reinforce these expectations at home as well. By practicing safety, respect, and responsibility in your daily interactions and activities with your child, you not only support their growth and character development but also reinforce the importance of these principles beyond the classroom.

Safety

Absolutely, ensuring the safety of all students, including the safety patrol, during morning drop-offs is paramount. Adhering to designated crosswalks helps maintain a safe environment for everyone. Please do not make U-turns in front of the school on Tourmaline or on Fanuel (especially during drop off and pick up). Also, please note that Fig Tree will be closed promptly at 7:50 allowing the supervising teacher to attend to his/her class.

Please supervise your children if you are hanging out in the front of the school after dismissal. Please also be mindful with all the interactions that you engage in while on or near our elementary-school campus. Please refrain from videotaping other peoples’ children unless you have been given permission from the parent. As we teach our students to be respectful to each other we want to practice demonstrating respect in all our interactions with one another as well. Our children are always watching.

The California Young Reader Medal

The California Young Reader Medal is a book award that is decided by the kids in California. Every year Ms. Busboom, our school librarian, reads the 5 nominated Picture Books to our grade UTK-2 students and the 3 nominated Picture Books for older Readers to our grade 3-5 students. The week after we’ve read all the books, the students vote. We have ballots, voting booths, and even official “I Voted” stickers! Ms. Busboom then adds up all the votes and sends in our total to the official headquarters and then reports back when the final winners are decided.

It’s a great opportunity to teach the kids about the process of voting, and they are always very excited to take part!

Squid Information

As mentioned in class, California Market Squid is part of our local habitat right off the coast. It is an enormously important fishery here in Southern California, landing more than 107 million pounds in 2021! Their short lifespan, about 10 months, makes them one of the most sustainable commercially fished species. This is something we are always mindful of when planning our sessions, and we work to help students understand both the value and responsibility of these experiences.

More information to explore:

If students and families are interested in learning more about our local squid and other organisms in our marine food web, here is some more information that we did not have time to watch in every class.

Zooplankton (copepods) being fed phytoplankton (plankton)

Filter Feeders – sand crabs

Squid are nocturnal, congregating for spawning more at night, and this is usually when most of the fishery takes place.

Squid Spawning – night

The hands-on experiences, teacher-directed lessons, and small group work that are missed cannot be made up. This dynamic learning makes consistent, regular attendance imperative to your child’s academic growth.

Please schedule non-emergency appointments outside of regular school hours and plan vacations during school holiday and vacation times.

He/she misses the morning routine and important information that teachers review at the start of the day. Please assist us in meeting your child’s educational needs by making sure your child is at school before 7:50 a.m.
If arriving later than 7:50 a.m. students must come to the office to check in and receive a tardy pass.

Be Safe

These expectations are not only integral to creating a conducive atmosphere for learning within the school premises but are also fundamental principles that contribute to the overall well-being and development of our students.

In line with our commitment to fostering these values, I encourage you to reinforce these expectations at home as well. By practicing safety, respect, and responsibility in your daily interactions and activities with your child, you not only support their growth and character development but also reinforce the importance of these principles beyond the classroom.

Also, please note that Fig Tree will be closed promptly at 7:50 allowing the supervising teacher to attend to his/her class.

Please supervise your children if you are hanging out in the front of the school after dismissal. Please also be mindful in all the interactions that you engage in while on or near our elementary-school campus. Our children are always watching.

Parent/Care-Giver Volunteers Needed

As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of our students, we are reaching out to request your assistance in supporting Mr. Sandler and Mrs. Erickson as they serve as our Safety Patrol Advisors.

Pacific Beach Elementary is in need of parent volunteers to serve as crossing guards during arrival and dismissal times. Your presence and support in this capacity will greatly contribute to the safe passage of our students across busy intersections near the school premises.

Your commitment to this vital role will involve:

🚸 Directing pedestrian traffic during designated times.

🚸 Ensuring students adhere to crossing protocols.

🚸 Assisting younger students in safely crossing the street.

🚸 Acting as a reassuring presence for our students and their families.

If you are able to volunteer for this important duty, please email Dr. Schnitzer at kschnitzer@sandi.net. Your participation will help us maintain a safe environment for all members of our school community.

We sincerely appreciate your dedication to the well-being of our students. Thank you for considering this request, and we look forward to working together to keep our school environment safe for everyone.

Absolutely, ensuring the safety of all students, including the safety patrol, during morning drop-offs is paramount. Adhering to designated crosswalks and refraining from jaywalking helps maintain a safe environment for everyone.

We have been receiving reports that children are climbing trees, playing hide-n-seek in the bushes, and some are picking up sticks and running with them. We are also having reports of mini tackle football games happening.

*Thank you for emphasizing this important aspect of morning routines and being mindful of our student leaders who serve as Safety Patrol at PBE and please use the crosswalks.
